What is bog oak and is it any good for woodworking?
Ian Kirby: Bog oak is a commercial name. I’ve never seen it attached to a species, so it’s different oaks to different folks! It’s generally made from logs that have been stuck in peaty ground (i.e. bogs) for long periods of time. It becomes dark and hard over time, and it’s fine for making furniture.
Ellis Walentine: Bog oak is wood that has lain submerged in a peat bog for a long time, sometimes a thousand years or more. Depending on the length of time it was submerged and the minerals that were present in the bog, the wood may appear mottled or black in color. Assuming you aren’t buying it still wet, it should be fine. I’ve used both the veneer and the solid wood with success.
