Butt joints are simple, but require gluing end grain to side grain – risky, unless reinforced. My solution is to strengthen the joints by drilling 1″ holes (splitting the joint) in the back side of the joints and filling them with tight-fitting wooden plugs. After the glue cures, I trim the plugs and sand them flush. The result is a simplified type of half-lap joint.
