Discarded screwdrivers tend to become paint can openers, but here’s another way to give them a second life. When I needed a scratch awl, I took one of my Phillips screwdrivers and reshaped the tip on my bench grinder. I followed the grinding by sharpening the tip to a point on a piece of plate glass with sandpaper adhered to it. The whole process only took about 15 or 20 minutes. Now it’s the only awl I use.
