I am working on a project that requires a 3″ hole. I purchased a good quality Forstner bit, but the bit should only be run at 350 rpm. My drill press won’t go slower than 620 rpm. Do you know of anything I can do?
Mike Van Pelt: I went out into the shop, chucked up a 3″ Forstner bit, turned my drill press to 350 rpm, and drilled a through hole into 1″ red oak. The bit did a very nice job. I then turned the speed up to 650 rpm and drilled several other clean holes. The drill bit performed very well. I suggest that your workpiece be clamped down well and you should not have any problems. Be sure to tighten down all three chuck prongs equally to insure that the bit is centered and secure. Wear your safety glasses and be careful.
