For quite a few years now, we’ve been reading about riving knives on table saws, and they are undoubtedly a great safety device that has long been a standard feature on European table saws. My question is not about the performance or function of the riving knife but: how the heck do you pronounce that word! Is “riving” supposed to rhyme with “living” or “diving”? – John Cusimano
Tim Inman: Easy – you say it just like you say, “Tomato.”
Chris Marshall: According to Webster, the latter word rhyme is correct. Maybe the shark-fin shape of many riving knives will make the diving/riving rhyme easier to remember.
