When I planed some rough-sawn spruce boards, they left pitch streaks on my planer. What is the best way to remove the pitch without damaging the metal and plastic?
Kevin Hancock: I’d use VM&P Naphtha to clean the pitch, though mineral spirits will also work.
John Brock: A strong solution of Simple Green does a nice job and the sassafras aroma is pleasant. If you are concerned about a waterbased solution on your metal parts, use turpentine, and have your nostrils blasted with pine. To minimize the buildup next time, pre-treat the bed and blades with SLIPIT.
