Making Cheap Dowels

I am always running out of dowels for joints. I recently picked a cheap dowel making set that has many sizes in it. Now I collect scraps of Oak or other hardwoods, and if I have time waiting for glue or paint to dry, I put a dowel bit in the drill press and crank out dowels.
