This is a Louisiana Sinker Cypress Box I sculpted and carved recently. The wood was retrieved from the Louisiana Swamp after being submerged since sometime in the 1800’s. When I got the lumber it had a moisture content between 50-55% I dried it until the moisture content was about 8% and then built a box from 1″ boards. I then roughed it out with my angle grinder prior to fine-tuning the carving with an electric carver and then started the tedious process of hand sanding for a good 10+ hours. This sinker cypress has such a high resin content that it gummed up my sandpaper constantly. A lot of work but I like the end result.
