Three new varieties of Liberon Shellac Flakes, in Garnet, Lemon and Blonde Dewaxed varieties, are now available at Rockler Woodworking and Hardware. They come in 250-gram packs of flakes that, typically, are dissolved for 24 hours in methylated spirits, then brushed or sprayed onto wood surfaces for a durable, high-gloss finish. The dewaxed shellac works well for sealing stains, odors and knots and can be used under other finishes. Drier than normal weather patterns in parts of south Asia for the past few years have affected the populations of the insect that produces seedlac, the raw material for shellac. Recently, however, seedlac production has rebounded. The Garnet (item 47802) and Lemon (item 44204) Liberon Shellac Flakes are priced at $24.99, and the Blonde Dewaxed (item 44684) is priced at $36.99.
