Although the month of June is still a couple of calendar flips away, we here at Woodworker’s Journal are more than happy to jump the gun and get Summer 2010 underway! I’m happy to report that your new June print issue is off the presses and in the mail. You should be receiving your copy very shortly. Let’s all get summer on the brain, shall we? Here’s a taste of what’s coming in the new issue:
Summerish Projects: Lars Dahlsgaard has a “shady” solution for beautifying your backyard, beach or wherever you need a break from the summer sun. His Portable Gazebo project is easy to build with a modest collection of tools, and its knockdown styling allows you to set it up or pack it to move in minutes. And, he’s got a clever approach to the roof: an ordinary patio umbrella. Or, maybe you’d like to add some counter space to the kitchen without spending all summer building it. Brad Becker might have just the project you’re looking for. He’s designed a cherry Kitchen Island using pre-made doors, butcherblock top, turned legs and other catalog supplies. Once the parts arrive, you can probably assemble this project in a long Saturday shop session. I’ve got a more involved shop project—a full-sized Miter Saw Stand—to keep you busy during those inevitable rainy days. It features built-in dust collection, plenty of storage and a precision fence. So, lots to do in this issue!
Tool News: George Vondriska takes a closer look at five different solutions for constructing loose-tenon joinery in our Today’s Shop department. Regardless of your budget, there’s a jig out there to help you get these sturdy joints built quickly and easily. Or, maybe you’d like to add some power behind those curved sanding jobs…anything to speed that process up, right? Sandor Nagyszalanczy puts benchtop oscillating spindle sanders to work in this issue’s tool review.
More Content for Your Hammock Time: Of course, our big projects and tool articles are just part of the June package. Expert woodworker Bruce Kieffer shares his secrets for applying solid wood edge banding, and Ian Kirby discusses marking tools in our ongoing Skill Builder series. Rob Johnstone will show you how to hog out bowl blanks in record time using a drill chuck on your lathe. Then, read up on your smoothing options for giving any project that final “going over” in Finishing Thoughts. And as always, we round out the issue with those other departments you’ve come to know and love: Shop Talk, Questions & Answers, What’s In Store and Stumpers.
So, turn off the shop heater, throw the windows open and let’s going rolling on some productive summer woodworking. We hope the June issue will get you off to a great start!
Catch you in the shop,
Chris Marshall, Field Editor
