Whether you need to cut, scrape, grind or sand your next woodworking or DIY project, Hitachi’s new CV18DBLP4 Oscillating Cordless Multi-tool could make the job easier. It sports the latest popular features of other multi-tools, plus one that’s unique to Hitachi.
For starters, Hitachi builds this tool around a maintenance-free, brushless motor that develops up to 20,000 rpm. It comes up to speed slowly, thanks to soft start, and Hitachi has outfitted the electronics with constant speed control circuitry in order to maintain consistent power regardless of load applied. Soft overmolds on the tool and a slim profile should make it more comfortable to hold, and a tool-free feature enables you to switch between accessories easily. The universal design of the accessory mount allows it to accept the majority of accessories available to multi-tools these days, regardless of brand. For low-light circumstances, the CV18DBLP4 also has an LED task light that illuminates the tip of the accessory and the work area.
Unique to Hitachi’s design, this multi-tool has two modes of speed. First, you can select “standard” variable-speed mode and dial the vibration frequency from 1 to 5, which translates to 6,000 to 20,000 rpm. Or, select “auto” mode instead, and the tool will determine the correct level of vibration for the task at hand, based on the load you are applying to it. Regardless of mode, a low-battery indicator light informs you when to switch to a fresh battery.
Selling for $199.97 through Amazon and other Hitachi retailers, the CV18DBLP4 comes as a “bare” tool, without batteries or a charger. But, it is compatible with all of Hitachi’s slide-type, 18-volt lithium-ion batteries. You also get a bi-metal plunge cut saw blade, and Hitachi backs your purchase with its Lifetime Lithium-ion Tool warranty.
