Cleaning with Bread

My wife introduced me to this trick used by her joiner brothers in Ireland:

To take pencil marks off a painted wall, rub with a piece of fresh bread. (It can’t be stale and hard; it needs some moisture content to work.) I used the technique after marking a wall to hang some pictures. I was amazed how well it worked.
