This is a box I built for my Physical Therapist to use as a collection box for a special event. I used Rosewood for the frame and lid, with Curly Maple inserts for a contrasting visual element; the sides are bent, 3/16 in. thick Flame Maple to give it an elegant, organic aspect. I carved a slot in the top in the shape of a soaring bird. The lid is hinged with small brass hinges inside and the box is lined with soft golden velour in loose folds. There is not one square corner in the entire box, which made it a real challenge to make all the joints fit together well. I finished it with six coats of clear satin spray lacquer, sanding between coats.
