Thinning Poly and Keeping Gloss

What is the difference between paint thinner and mineral spirits, and what can I use to thin the polyurethane and still not lose any of the gloss?

Michael Dresdner: Those are two terms for the same thing, and either will work nicely as a thinner for oil-based polyurethane.
