While watching Norm Abram, I noticed that he uses a very slow speed when using his drill press. Is this recommended as standard use, or is it just for special woods?
Andy Rae: It’s more about the type of bit than the type of wood. We drill at high speeds with small-diameter cutters, such as regular twist bits up to a half inch or so. Large-diameter and large-mass bits, such as Forstner bits, wing cutters, and other specialty bits, require slower spin speeds to work safely and cut effectively. Chances are, Norm was drilling slowly with a really big bit.
Richard Jones: Using slow speeds with large diameter bits like Forstner or sawtooth bits also helps prevent burning and clear wood shavings.
