Back in 2003, Porter-Cable’s 890 router was one of the new kids on the woodworking block. This year, it grows up to an upgrade for both its plunge base and dust control features.
The plunge base now has a six-position adjustable turret stop for stepped plunge cuts. A single, flat side on the base allows routing in tight spaces and also provides a straight reference point. A lever release and rubber overmolded handles combine for quick, comfortable transitions between bases. To make all those operations – whether it’s general cutting, dado stops, fluting or whatever else a woodworker wants to do – smooth, the plunge base now has machined brass bushings and steel guide rods.
Improvements in the dust collection are a through-the-column system and a clear Lexan® sub-base and dust shroud. The Lexan accoutrements come standard, and allow for better bit and cut-line visibility.
The newly improved 890 plunge base – which works with the motors of all of the previous 890, 2 ¼-peak horsepower routers, is available separately (called model 8931), and it also is now offered as part of Porter-Cable’s multi-base kits.
