Q: It was interesting learning about resilvering a mirror, however I need information on polishing the mirror glass surface which I inadvertently scratched.
Tim Inman: Oops! You’re now stuck with a blemish on that mirror, any way you cut it. Silvered glass shows every surface defect. The flatness of the glass surface is the perfection of the reflected image. There are abrasives which one can use to remove the scratch; auto glass guys buff out windshield wiper marks all the time and you can check with one of them to get the supplies locally. However, buffing out a scratch will leave a divot or low place in the glass which will show in the resilvered mirror as a distortion. We recommend that our customers accept the scratch as a true indicator of an injury, and not go through the work and expense of polishing out a scratch only to end up with a more obvious blemish.
